Parents shouldn't let children eat too many cinnamon rolls

After all, delicious Christmas pastries such as speculoos and gingerbread cannot be baked without the exotic spice. But even if the treats are tempting in the Advent season, children shouldn't eat too much of it. Because cinnamon can be harmful to health in high doses.
Cinnamon shouldn't be missing in many Christmas cookies
In Advent, there is hardly anything more beautiful for many children than baking delicious Christmas cookies with their parents. Cinnamon is used for numerous varieties. The delicious spice is actually considered healthy, but in high doses the substance can also be dangerous. Parents should therefore make sure that the little ones don't snack on too much cinnamon biscuits.
For the prevention and treatment of diabetes
Cinnamon has been known for its health benefits since ancient times. The spice is still used, among other things, for indigestion such as flatulence.
It is said to have a disinfectant effect and to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels. In addition, cinnamon stimulates the metabolism, which is helpful if you want to accelerate weight loss.
According to health experts, cinnamon is also one of the foods that help prevent diabetes.
The nutrition and diet expert Sven-David Müller (Master of Science in Applied Nutritional Medicine) has criticized in the past that many medical professionals would simply not mention the effects of cinnamon for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Furthermore, the exotic spice is good for the intestine. And scientific studies have shown that cinnamon can improve learning ability and our memory.
Harmful ingredient coumarin
However, it is now also known that cinnamon - in large quantities - can harm health. Because of the coumarin it contains.
Small children should therefore not snack on too much cinnamon biscuits. This is pointed out by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania consumer center.
As the experts explain, cinnamon naturally contains the aroma and fragrance coumarin. In high doses, this can damage the liver in humans.
The coumarin content of cinnamon depends on the variety. Ceylon cinnamon (also Kaneel cinnamon) contains significantly less coumarin than the more common cassia cinnamon (also China cinnamon).
No more than six small cinnamon stars for toddlers
According to the consumer advice center, buying cinnamon-containing food only poses a health hazard for adults if they consume very large quantities of it every day.
However, children can easily take in too much coumarin due to their lower body weight.
According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), for example, small children with a body weight of 15 kilograms should not eat more than 30 grams of cinnamon stars (around six small cinnamon stars) or 100 grams of gingerbread a day.
An adult with a body weight of 60 kilos, on the other hand, could eat more than 120 grams of cinnamon stars (about 24 small ones) or 400 grams of gingerbread per day if no other sources of coumarin are added.
It's better to use Ceylon cinnamon
In the EU, there are maximum levels for coumarin for certain foods such as "traditional / seasonal baked goods", which also include cinnamon-containing Christmas cookies.
As the Consumer Center Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania writes, studies have shown that these maximum quantities are generally complied with by manufacturers or not exhausted.
However, since there are no maximum amounts for cinnamon sticks or ground cinnamon, caution is advised when used in the household.
The experts recommend using coumarin-poor Ceylon cinnamon better when regularly using larger amounts of cinnamon.
This also applies if a lot of cinnamon is used for baking Christmas cookies.
However, the search is made more difficult because the variety does not have to be indicated on the cinnamon packaging. Only some providers voluntarily state the type of cinnamon. (ad)
