Scientists at the University of Otago in New Zealand have now found out in an investigation that if patients take a 10-minute walk after eating, it causes their blood sugar levels to drop significantly. The doctors published the results of their study in the journal "Diabetologia".

People with type 2 diabetes should become physically active after eating
Taking a walk after eating could help control diabetes. A 10-minute walk directly after eating leads to a lower blood sugar level, the specialists say. When patients took a 30-minute walk three times a day after eating, it had a positive effect on blood sugar levels. The results should encourage people with type 2 diabetes to do regular physical activity after eating, the doctors explain.

Three walks after meals get good results
In the past, medical professionals advised patients with type 2 diabetes to exercise regularly. In their current study, however, the doctors explain that a single walk is not optimal. Three walks immediately after meals (within five minutes) lowered the blood sugar level by 22 percent after the walk, the scientists say. This value is still 12 percent lower than for people who only took one walk a day.

Three short walks are more effective than one long walk
The scientists from the University of Otago examined 41 volunteers for their study. These showed that shorter walks immediately after meals lower the blood sugar level. Doctors also suspected that most people are likely to take multiple short, consistent walks rather than a single 30-minute walk.

Most people hardly move after dinner
The improvement in overall postprandial glycemia was largely determined by lower blood sugar levels after dinner, the doctors explain. At this point, the consumption of carbohydrates is high and the participants were more likely to become sedentary.

Muscle contraction shortly after eating helps in the transport of glucose
The University of Otago experts didn't exactly investigate why post-meal exercise was more effective than a single walk sometime in the day. Previous research suggested that muscle contractions help transport the newly digested glucose into the muscle cells shortly after eating. This happens without the need for insulin, the scientists explain.

Another study finds benefits of five longer walks a week
Another study by the University of Cambridge and University College London previously found that people should take a 30-minute walk five times a week. As a result, those affected have a 26 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This study was also published in the journal "Diabetologia", say the experts. (as)
