Increased Insulin Levels - Why Obesity Promotes Cancer
Being overweight is bad for your health. If you weigh too much, you not only have an increased risk of diabetes, but also of various types of cancer. As with diabetes, this could be caused by a disturbed insulin balance.
Risk factor for lifestyle diseases
Anyone who weighs too much endangers their health. Obesity is a risk factor for lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. It also increases the risk of numerous cancers. Reducing your weight is therefore one of the most important measures to reduce your personal cancer risk.
Being overweight increases the risk of cancer
Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer recently reported in the British Medical Journal a study showing that being overweight increases the risk of 11 cancers.
The German Society for Internal Medicine (DGIM) now points out in a message from the dpa news agency that people who carry too much weight are at higher risk of colon cancer, breast cancer, esophageal cancer, cancer of the kidney, pancreas or Uterus.
Increased insulin levels promote tumor growth
Doctors believe that the often permanently increased insulin level in overweight people favors tumor growth.
That is why patients with obesity usually have a lower chance of surviving cancer than those with normal weight.
Apparently, the fat cells themselves also contribute to a larger inflammatory process in the body. However, weight loss can reverse this process. According to the DGIM, the risk of developing cancer then drops again.
Reduce health risks through weight loss
Healthy weight loss has even more advantages.
According to experts, a five to ten percent weight reduction already shows clear positive effects. This improves the metabolism, as well as the insulin sensitivity of the organs and the blood sugar value decrease. (ad)
