Why are light cigarettes so harmful to the lungs?
We all know that smoking cigarettes is bad for your health. Many people want to quit smoking or just smoke less. This can be one of the reasons why people start smoking light cigarettes. But researchers have now found that consuming light cigarettes leads to an increased risk of lung cancer.

In their investigation, Ohio State University researchers found that so-called light cigarettes can be more dangerous to human lungs than normal cigarettes. For this reason, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration insists on completely banning light cigarettes. In Germany, cigarettes are no longer allowed to be advertised as “light”. The doctors published the results of their study in the journal "Journal of the National Cancer Institute".

Experts are studying the effects of smoking
The research team consisted of specialists in lung cancer, public health and tobacco regulation. For their study, these experts analyzed the existing literature on chemical and toxicology studies, which examined both human clinical studies and epidemiological studies on the effects on smokers and non-smokers.

Cigarettes now have more air holes in their filters
Cigarettes produced today are far more dangerous than they were 40 years ago. Cigarette manufacturers are now inserting more holes in the cigarette filters, explains author Dr. Peter Shields. These ventilation holes in the cigarettes mix the air with the smoke.

What do the air holes in cigarettes do?
The air holes in the cigarettes make the smoke softer. The smoke is less hard and as a result, many smokers rate it as harmless, explain the doctors. The additional air allows the cigarettes to burn better and encourages smokers to take longer trains. Many people think that they don't smoke cigarettes that are so harmful when they consume light cigarettes, the authors add.

Modified cigarettes lead to more cases of lung cancer
The change in cigarette designs led to an increase in the most common type of lung cancer, known as adenocarcinoma, as early as 2014, the Surgeon General’s Report on smoking and health found. The U.S. For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has considered banning light cigarettes. The FDA has the possibility to control and change the design of cigarettes if this can improve public health.

Should smokers now switch from light cigarettes to normal cigarettes?
Normal cigarettes have the least amount of air holes. Light cigarettes have more holes and so-called ultra-light cigarettes have the most air holes in their filters, the doctors explain. However, this does not mean that smokers should now switch from ultra-light to normal cigarettes, the authors say.

It is best to stop smoking altogether
Cigarettes are a deadly threat to our health. The benefit for smokers that is achieved by changing the type of cigarette would simply be too small compared to stopping cigarette consumption, the scientists say. (as)
